Forgot to mention prices in the list of restaurants. The cheapest will be La Poesia, then El Baztan, then the others are about the same price.

Also, there is a parilla stand on Carlos Calvo between Defensa and Bolivar (Freddy's) that's fantastic if you aren't a vegetarian. The choripan (sausage sandwich) is great and the vaciopan (steak sandwich) is even better.

Have fun!

Hi Sarah... here are a few recommendations and brief descriptions to help you decide. Some places may be closed for the holidays (in January people take off either the first 15 days of the month or the last 15 days).

El Baztan - (on Estados Unidos between Chacabuco and Piedras) cheese bar with a few outdoor tables. Cute place and pretty good lunch options.
La Poesia - (on corner of Chile and Bolivar) traditional bar/cafe with traditional food. Gorgeous atmosphere. Feels like you've stepped back in time.
Caseros - (on Caseros between Defensa and Bolivar)lovely spot, good food, great bread.
Hierbabuena -(just down the road from Caseros) I haven't been here yet but it looks great. Looks like healthy fresh food.
Cafe San Juan - (on San Juan between Defensa and Bolivar) one of my favorites in the city. Great food sort of Mediterranean style. Cute little restaurant run by a skateboarding chef and his mom.

Hope you guys have a great time!

Thanks for the great info and photos! My boyfriend and I will be spending the day in San Telmo on Tuesday. Do you have any favorite restaurant you could recommend to us? The cheaper the better ;) Should we just grab street food? Let me know if you want to meet us :D

Well, they sort of roam along Defensa. This week there were some Colombians selling sandwiches, too. Didn't get to try them, but love that there is such a variety of street food here. Thanks for stopping by, Paul!
