I love the market, the architecture, the variety of restaurants, the street fair, the nature reserve, Plaza Dorrego and siesta. Most of all, I love the authenticity of San Telmo.

Restaurant Review: Les Anciens Combattants

les anciens combattants, french restaurant, buenos aires

This is by far the best French cuisine I’ve had outside of France. Not only do they serve seafood, which is rare in Buenos Aires, the setting, service, and presentation were all exceptional. Les Anciens Combattants is in my top 10.

La Peña del Colorado

La Jury at La Peña del Colorado

Live folklore shows and a rowdy crowd make La Peña del Colorado one of our favorite spots in town. Argentinean folklore features amazing guitar players with talented criollo singers. Order the pinguino, but make sure you get some soda to go with it.

Colonia del Sacramento for the Day

Colonia del Sacramento

This lovely colonial town in Uruguay is the perfect day trip from Buenos Aires. I wouldn’t recommend staying longer than a day. In fact, you could take the ferry in the morning and come back in the evening. But Colonia is well worth a visit.

A Canadian chef, Taryn Wa, stayed in our loft in March. She wrote a post, “Eating Out, Porteño Style,”  on her blog, Buen Provecho, about the culinary treats she found while traveling in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. Food is definitely one of the reasons to come to Buenos Aires. I love how Taryn describes the porteño [...]

I’m often asked which neighborhood (barrio) is better, San Telmo or Palermo Soho.  Here’s a brief description of the two barrios from an insider/outsider point of view to help you decide.

San Telmo (above) is tango and the past; Palermo Soho (below) is hip and modern.  Choosing between the two is really a matter of what [...]

Parilla Lezama for Dinner

Parilla Lezama on Brasil Street offers typical dishes (cocina porteña). While the place we’d most recommend for steaks in San Telmo is Don Ernesto, Parilla Lezama is one of our favorite restaurants in the area.

Since it’s a grill, you could order the parilla (grilled meats) which they’ll bring to the table on a small [...]

Asking for the Check

by Angela on February 7, 2008 · 0 comments

in know, speak

Restaurant customs are different all over the world. For example, in Egypt, waiters tend to take your plates and drinks before you’ve finished. This always annoyed my ex-pat friends. I think they felt like we were being asked to leave. But you can stay at a table in Egypt as long as you like and you’ll rarely [...]
