Restaurant Review: Les Anciens Combattants

by Angela on June 19, 2009 · 3 comments

les anciens combattants, french restaurant, buenos aires

This is by far the best French cuisine I’ve had outside of France. Not only do they serve seafood, which is rare in Buenos Aires, the setting, service, and presentation were all exceptional. Les Anciens Combattants is in my top 10.

La Reserva Ecológica

reserva ecologica, nature reserve, buenos aires, san telmo, puerto madero

The absolute best way to see the river (Rio de la Plata) in Buenos Aires is spending the day in the Ecological Reserve (Reserva Ecologico). Picnic, ride a bike, hike, enjoy the plants and flower with views of the river.

La Peña del Colorado

La Jury at La Peña del Colorado

Live folklore shows and a rowdy crowd make La Peña del Colorado one of our favorite spots in town. Argentinean folklore features amazing guitar players with talented criollo singers. Order the pinguino, but make sure you get some soda to go with it.

Shop at Tango Brujo in Downtown Buenos Aires

I should begin by pointing out that I don’t know how to dance tango. I think it’s amazing though and I’d love to learn. So when my mom and niece were coming to visit, I decided it was time to take a couple of classes with people who know as little as I do and [...]

Empanadas Ready for the Oven

We went to the town of Adrogue for a cooking class where Teresita taught us to make the best beef and corn empanadas I’ve ever had. We loved Teresita, loved her home, and devoured the empanadas.

Colonia del Sacramento for the Day

Colonia del Sacramento

This lovely colonial town in Uruguay is the perfect day trip from Buenos Aires. I wouldn’t recommend staying longer than a day. In fact, you could take the ferry in the morning and come back in the evening. But Colonia is well worth a visit.

Argentinean Asado 101

by Angela on May 4, 2008 · 6 comments

in eat, know

The strike has ended for now, so it’s time to beef up again. For tourists, that’s a very good thing since eating Argentinean beef should be at the top of all non-vegetarians’ list of “What not to Miss.”

You can opt for an upscale restaurant and order a lomo (tenderloin) with a dijon-béchamel sauce and fancy potatoes [...]

I’m often asked which neighborhood (barrio) is better, San Telmo or Palermo Soho.  Here’s a brief description of the two barrios from an insider/outsider point of view to help you decide.

San Telmo (above) is tango and the past; Palermo Soho (below) is hip and modern.  Choosing between the two is really a matter of what [...]

Parilla Lezama for Dinner

by Angela on March 10, 2008 · 0 comments

in eat

Parilla Lezama on Brasil Street offers typical dishes (cocina porteña). While the place we’d most recommend for steaks in San Telmo is Don Ernesto, Parilla Lezama is one of our favorite restaurants in the area.

Since it’s a grill, you could order the parilla (grilled meats) which they’ll bring to the table on a small [...]
